A pool turns green because of algae, and algae grows when chlorine drops low enough to stop controlling it. That is the whole mechanism. Everything else — the heat, the rain, the Florida sun — is about how fast the chlorine gets there.

Chlorine is the primary sanitizer in most South Florida pools. It kills bacteria and keeps algae from taking hold, but it is consumed by the work it does and degraded by ultraviolet light. On a clear, hot Florida day, unstabilized free chlorine can lose a significant portion of its potency within hours of sunlight exposure. Cyanuric acid, sometimes called stabilizer or conditioner, slows that degradation and is why outdoor pool chemistry requires different management than indoor or commercial pools.

The problem in summer is that multiple things happen at once. Heat speeds up the biological activity that consumes chlorine. Heavy afternoon rain, which South Florida gets reliably from June through September, dilutes the chemistry in the pool — chlorine, alkalinity and pH all drop together. And if the pool has not been treated with stabilizer at the right level, the sun finishes off whatever chlorine was left before the next service visit arrives.

Under those conditions a pool can go from clear to noticeably green in 48 to 72 hours. That is not an exaggeration for effect. A pool that looks fine on Monday morning after a weekend of afternoon storms and heat can be visibly green by Wednesday. Most homeowners discover it when they walk outside and the water looks wrong.

The timeline matters because algae is not just a visual problem. Once it takes hold it starts working against you in several ways at the same time.

First, algae consumes chlorine faster than normal water does. A pool that has turned green will burn through treatment quickly, which means a single shock dose often is not enough and the chemistry has to be managed over several days for the water to clear properly.

Second, algae strains into the filter. The filtration system is designed to handle normal debris and particulate load, not a full algae bloom. When a green pool is treated and the dead algae starts circulating, it can overwhelm the filter in a short period. A filter that is not cleaned during recovery will either re-circulate the algae back into the pool or lose flow entirely, slowing the clearing process significantly.

Third, and more expensively, certain strains of algae will stain pool surfaces if left long enough. Plaster and pebble surfaces can take on a greenish or grey discoloration that does not come out with treatment alone — it has to be brushed aggressively during the right phase of the recovery, and in some cases the staining is permanent enough to require resurfacing.

The practical question homeowners ask is what they can do themselves versus when to call a professional. The honest answer depends on how far the pool has progressed.

If the water is slightly off-color — a hint of green or cloudiness — and you caught it early, a homeowner with access to the right chemicals and a reliable test kit can often handle it. You need to test the water accurately first to know what is missing, shock with the appropriate chlorine product at the correct dose for your pool volume, run the filter continuously, brush the walls and floor to break up surface algae, and retest after 24 hours. The sequence matters: adding the right chemical in the wrong order, or shocking without knowing the current pH level, can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment or in rare cases cause problems like bleaching a vinyl liner.

That means testing and adjusting regularly, maintaining the stabilizer level, and not letting weeks pass between chemical checks during the summer months.
